Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
Author, scientific researcher, and active therapist, Bessel van der Kolk MD, has dedicated his career to discovering more about trauma and the link between the brain & the body. Trauma has more of a wild effect on the brain and body than you would expect. Living in self-preservation mode and a constant sense of danger, heightens the almost constant secretion of stress hormones, attack one's immune system and the body's organs. Trauma takes a sledgehammer to the brain's flexibility, focus, and ability to stay in emotional control.
That may make it sound really hopeless, buuuutttttttt....the baddie of a brain has a thing called ~neurolasticity.~ Trauma survivors have more of an ability than we know to "reclaim" their bodies via different forms of therapy, trauma processing, retraining the neurosystem - and fun things like exercise, meditation, yoga, playtime, art, and th8r!
